Your Time. Your Health. Your Money.
This Month
Welcome, everyone! I'm excited to launch my monthly newsletter, OUTLIVE THE ORDINARY! I'm glad you're here with me.
In my role as a fiduciary financial and wealth advisor, my goal is to help you maximize your time, your health, and your money. This newsletter is one way for me to do that, as I keep the lines of communication open with so many of you I've met along the way.
I believe true wealth means having the freedom to spend your time well, invest in your health, and integrate your money with what matters most.
With that in mind, I'll share guidance, inspiration, and common sense approaches in each newsletter that I believe can help you better prepare for the inevitable curves life likes to throw at us.
It's About Time
Time for a quick story.
Have you ever felt like your life was headed in one direction, but you wanted to go another way?
I have.
In November 2020, I was finishing my first operational MH-60R flying tour at Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Japan, 25 miles northwest of downtown Tokyo. With my 40-week pregnant wife standing next to me, we stared down at our black IKEA kitchen table, covered with 42 pieces of notebook paper that I had torn minutes earlier.
These pieces of paper represented the 42 "billets" or jobs available to us with our next three-year tour in the U.S. Navy. As my wife, Dani, and I moved the pieces of paper around our table, we both knew one thing.
We were ready for something different.
I would eventually re-order them and send an email to the "detailer" who would decide our family's fate. Just a day earlier, I had spent my last night (or so I thought, at the time) in my rack (bed) on the USS Ronald Reagan, one of 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service. While Dani and I felt ready for the next duty station and anxious for something new, neither of us regretted the two-and-a-half years we'd spent in Japan together. I had split my time between multiple ships and our home in Japan—almost exactly down the middle. It reminded me of my high school years, when I had split time between my divorced parents.
Those tattered papers may as well have been a crystal ball. Dani and I saw the same thing: a future that didn't include a chaotic flight schedule, 12+ hour work days, or living on a ship for half the year. We saw a day in the near future where together we would enjoy the laughter, cries, and snuggles from our soon-to-be-born son!
That moment represents what so many of us go through at one point or another in our lives. We sometimes feel "out of sync" and dream of a change. It took me three years from that moment to figure out my family's next path, and it's one of many moments which led me to launch Outlive Financial Planning, a values-based and fee-only financial planning firm.
So, what can you expect?
With each month's newsletter, I'll share relevant and practical tips that impact YOUR true wealth.
Because it's about YOUR time. YOUR health. YOUR money.
Next month's newsletter will kick off a format that shares additional insights related to three main categories: Time. Health. Money. I'll always respect your time, so you can expect a brief but what I hope will be an impactful newsletter. For now, I want to thank you for following along. Many of you reading this are great friends, colleagues, family, and people I've met along the way. You've each played a part in my journey in creating this.
